How to Deal with Secret Service

In case you skipped over the plethora of canine-centric news bulletins recently about the dogs of The White House,(perhaps because of the hundreds of more urgent things there are to worry about), the newest wrinkle is that the Bidens brought in a two year old German shepherd named Commander to live with them. And he has been winning no one’s loyalty or affection because he is the second German shepherd belonging to the Biden family who has bitten members of The White House staff. In this case, it was ELEVEN different bitings. This is difficult IMPOSSIBLE for an active dog appreciator like myself to understand.

But I especially relate to this problem because I, too, have a German shepherd. Unlike Commander, mine does not have a pedigree. Mine is, of course, a rescue. But, like Commander, she, too, is not the best behaved girl in the world. She has never bitten a person, but while we were getting her desire to annihilate other dogs under control, we put a muzzle on her when she was out in public… in the interest of protecting other dogs.

Unaware that it made her look like Hannibal Lecter, she didn’t seem to mind wearing it. She could even drink water and eat snacks with it on. Problem temporarily and rather easily solved.

So I instantly began to ask myself WHY? WHY OH WHY didn’t the Bidens give this approach a try before Commander took even his second bite of Secret Service Man. How did they allow it to continue, uninterrupted, until he bit number ELEVEN?

Of course, a muzzle is not the only solution, (or even the best solution) to correcting the problem of a biting dog. Obviously a good trainer needs to be put on retainer immediately if not sooner . But there are also other courses of action.

Even though I am pretty sure that the Bidens do NOT consult my substack page, I still felt the urge to do my patriotic duty by trying to help them with the only one of their problems about which I have any grasp of solutions. But first, to make sure that I was covering all the bases, I consulted with the dog psychologist that understands dogs better than any other. He is the only one I trust to talk directly to the troubled dog in terms to which he or she will easily relate.
