I’m fighting the urge to say something snarky to the poster above, who apparently thinks the rest of us are morons. But I didn’t come here for that. I love your writing, and I think I may need sedation for the next for months. This shit is scary. Like permanently, I think. I really hope I’m wrong.
I am lucky to have a pup that doesn’t seem to care. I’m lucky to have him in many other ways too. It’s sadly fascinating how many of us are contemplating moving. A friend has already moved to Mexico and loves it. I keep thinking we’re in trouble no matter what the result. Either Trump wins or his violent followers kill everyone because it was rigged. Again! Please pass me the sedatives.
That was both hilarious and frightening! Great writing, Merrill! Funny cartoons, like my favorite - the LA axe murderer, hahaha! But, with presidential immunity going to the guy who is most likely to be elected… I too am going for a sedative and a dive under the bed!
100% agree. Two of my Great Danes are terrified of fireworks, and it has gotten worse as they have aged. I live in the San Fernando Valley which is like a battlefield on the 4th. (Lord knows it might be a real one next year if the MAGAs prevail). They get massive doses of vet prescription drugs, with the ac and tv blasting. I drink heavily and we all are miserable until first light.
We’ve had several like that. We used a technique where we took them to loud places - like sitting near an airport. Initially, they were still on edge, but as we did that and other similar activities, they got used to it. When they responded, they got a treat - and good ones like frozen dog treats. It can take some time. Remember, too, if you’re on edge, they will be. 😉. There are some dogs that take longer to adjust, but usually, with consistent training, they come around.
It’s kind of like babies. Some folks try to have their baby’s nursery all quiet and that’s great. I took a different route. Our dtr’s nursery was facing a Main Street that had lot of traffic along with emergency vehicles. She could and did sleep anywhere. 😂 Dogs are like babies. Most babies that had quiet rooms would’ve adapted to a bit of noise.
Most dogs adapt. When they don’t, those hugging coats and some CBD can work wonders. 😉
I’ve already researched citizenship in Lithuanian which I can acquire relatively easily by providing my grandparents’ birth certificates( okay so it’s not THAT easy).
Once you have EU citizenship in one EU country, it’s good for all. Are the Scandinavian countries part of the EU?
No. That’s why I checked on the EU regulations- Lithuania is EU which means you can gain citizenship in any EU country. I’d like one of the cooler ones temperature- wise.
I haven’t checked yet on the Scandinavian countries. Herring! Lots of herring.
We’ve 8 dogs and have no problems at all. The key? Training. From the time our dogs were pups with us or adopted/rescued, we never told them that the noise was okay. What? Because that affirmed that they should be fearful. When you say “okay” to a dog, they think you’re telling them that their behavior is okay. We rewarded positive behaviors towards the noise of fireworks. Now? They sleep right through it.

Yeah. I wouldnt have believed it possible based on the flimsiness of the counter arguments. And then I watched Hillary go down.
SPAIN! PORTUGAL! TURKEY
Made Diet Coke come out of my nose.
Worth it though.
I'm ramping up the CBD dose for my 12 year old Boston.
Motherfuckers.
❤️
I protest!
By virtue of the fact that our cat ends up in the guest room.
Under the bed.
Upside down.
Hanging from the bedframe . . .
Independence Day (sic) is not just about terrifying DOGS!
Funny piece, btw. Thanks.
my buddy's retriever of 12 years ran off last year because of fireworks...never saw him again
i hope he made it to Portugal
Sedagives.... plus there are those in the neighborhood who think it's a good idea to shoot off really loud firecrackers in the street.
It's not just the far off display noise that they can feel but the close ones are really bad. One of my dogs has a complete meltdown but for
Sedagives.
For all those whose dogs don't react, yay you. Sucks to be the rest of us, I guess.🤷♀️

my doggies travel xanax is looking pretty good after that immunity ruling.
May need to use my wifes Irish citizenship in a few months...
fab art, thank you 😊

Thanks. And yes,...terrifying. I really dont want to have to move.

Thank you Merrill for the additions this year!

Denmark, Finland and Sweden are in the EU. Norway and Iceland no
Thank you, as always, Merrill!

i rescued my dogs and the behavior is ingrained. Not sure there is anything to do except give them sedatives and hug them.
